Sonic 2 HD alpha now available…but for how long!

As previously mentioned here at the Retro Asylum, Sonic 2 HD is nearing completion and now the latest version is available to be played.

The game is already looking looking amazing in beautiful HD, the graphics in the orignal Sonic 2 were amazing on the Megadrive but this game just takes it to a whole new level.

Heres hoping that Sega wont strike again and have this game taken down as a lot of hard work has gone into it.

Holy s**t! I rememeber seeing this years ago when they had an initial engine in place.

Things have certainly moved on since then.

As Alphas go, this is by far the most polished one i’ve seen.

Not only does it play the same as the original, but it includes all the music, animation, enemies and the end of zone boss.

When it’s released, get it before Sega stamp all over it – which I’m pretty sure they will.

As long as the frame rate is solid 60fps this should be a corker. Any less and you may as well play the original.

It looked, sounded and controlled good but I thought the speed was sluggish and I’m on Pentium 4.

Welcome back. I’ve had a good cooling down period. Played a few 2600 & 5200 games.

This was my favorate level in the game as it was proper Sonic. T

hey went with a stupid idea for the second level Hydocity Zone though forcing you to slow down and jump some thin moving platforms that are only just a little longer than the character.

Thats why I preferred Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. They have better level designs that suited the Sonic speed well without any of that thin platform and slowing down nonsense of Hydrocity Zone.

The good thing about it other than how awesome they are coming along with this project is that it has Game Controller support and my USB Sega Saturn controller aka game pad works very nicely with it. It feels like the megadrive with HD. I give these guys mad props for not only for their amazing efforts but they also thought to put game pad support because playing retro games using a keyboard is just wrong in my opinion so I highly commend these guys for thinking ahead.
