New Monty Mole Game for 2013

Revenge of the Mole

Children win game design competition to release a new Monty Mole title, as a brand new ZOOL games competition for schools is announced for Games Britannia 2013

A team from All Saints High School has won a Games Britannia Game Design Competition to have their design for a new Monty Mole game developed and released by Steel Minions Studio at Sheffield Hallam University. All Saints entered their Monty: Revenge of the Mole game design as part of the Games Britannia 2012, winning one of just eight places to take part in a Game Jam event held at the festival last July. Here they got to meet Peter Harrop, Tony Crowther, Ben Dauglish and Ian Stewart, who created the original Monty Mole games at Gremlin Graphics in the 1980s. Each school team spent an action-packed day working with students from Sheffield Hallam University to create a prototype of their game to present to the original Gremlin panel.

The All Saints prototype was judged to be the best on the day and their grand prize was to have their prototype turned into a finished game by the Steel Minions game studio. The finished game features ten levels of thrilling platform-gaming action both above and below ground and artwork created by the children themselves. Proceeds from the game will be donated to the SpecialEffect gaming charity.

SpecialEffect parent and fundraiser Nick Streeter said “We would like to thank all of those involved in this exciting project and especially the children from All Saints High School, all the funds raised will help our ground breaking work to help more children with disabilities enjoy games. As a parent of young girl with disabilities I know for what huge vale games can have for motivation, self-esteem and inclusion and the fact that sales of Monty Mole will help more children with disabilities have fun really is fantastic.”

The aim of “Monty: Revenge of the Mole” is to help Monty rescue his wife, who has been kidnapped by the evil Vogel the Vulture. Unfortunately the Badger Police have mistakenly imprisoned Monty for her murder, and his best-friend Herb must jailbreak him first! On the run from the police and in pursuit of Vogel, Monty must do battle with a giant, acid-spitting British Bulldog before he can defeat his nemesis and save his beloved wife. Set within the backdrop of London City, Monty has to scale the monuments of Trafalgar Square and mine his way through the London Underground in order to outwit his opponents and save the day.

The release of the Monty game coincides with the launch of the 2013 Games Britannia Game Design Competition, which is open to schools throughout the UK, and results in the winning game being published in January 2014. This year’s theme is the character ZOOL, created by Gremlin Graphics in the 1990s.

The new 2013 Schools Game Design Competition is open to 7-18 year olds working in teams of 4-6 students, with judging in different age categories. The finalists take part in the Game Jam event on the opening day of Games Britannia 2013, Monday 10th June, where they compete for the grand prize of having their game completed and published by the Steel Minions game studio. The competition closes on the 17th May 2013.

More details about the competition can be found on the Games Britannia website.

The PC version of Monty: Revenge of the Mole game is now available on the IndieCity store priced at 60 pence and all proceeds (apart from credit card fees) will go to the Special Effect charity. Other platform releases are planned for the near future. A press pack for the game is also available.

This is truly awesome, I’m going to get it.
It’s amazing and heart warming that younger generation can get involved and do something like this.
