A trip to Retro Game Base

Down the road from Streatham station is a odd little shop most people would just walk past and not pay any attention to on a normal day of the week but  to people like us here at the retro Asylum this is one of the few places we can call home…because the fact Game, Game Station and Cex do not cater to our needs and choice of gaming so I decided to get some of my free time to good use and check out the Retro Gaming Base store that has opened recently, and I was not disappointed

The Shop is self is a nice size and one side of the wall is just covered pron end to end with just about any system and games that go with it and this shop no just dealt with console but also 8 Bit system to as there was a sinclair ZX81 tucked nicely away in a display case at the front of the store along with quite a nice selection of console titles covering all your fave systems of yesterday and the prices are nto bad either. I picked up Theme Park for the megadrive for £2.50 and cheapest I could find it on ebay was £2.99  but the gentleman behind the counter is a easy going guy great to talk to and shares a passion for retro.

But other things that made this store stand out was the fully working arcade machine…he has a Streetfighter 2 Arcade and look at this southend dosent have a single one plus a point blank machine and the MVS neo geo 6 slot machine and a few table top style machines one of which was Hyper sports with full support for 4 players…Nice! and all playable at reasonable prices , and then throw in a few couches so you can relax and this is a cosy little place to kick back and relax…but there is more…

Among the many games there is a lot of old old systems but accessories everywhere but they also sell clone consoles that can play multiple systems one for example can play megadrive and nes games in one machine … imagine that back in the day there would be lawsuits everywhere but they cost in the region to £40 -£50 plus they also know a few things about modification too, and got a old system with no pad no problem they sell brand new third party controllers that are being made even today.

This is a great little store and if you can well worth a visit if you a fan of retro gaming or hope to get hold of one of those titles your missing for your collection, and the store will be holding competitions soon on saturdays hey you might even find me in there trying to either show off my skills or failing on a epic scale but i would definitely go there to hang out if i can afford the train fare lol.

Need some details the Address is 430 Streatham High Road, London, SW16 3PX

Simply get off at Streatham train station turn right when you leave and follow the road down for 10 minutes and your there.

    Philistines.

If this shop was in my town, and the road was a river of broken glass, I would swim through it to get across and visit.

I spotted a Street Fighter 2 myself at a different beech on the town next to Dawlish. The 3 Dawlish arcades themselves this yeah become really crap with no games choice other than gambling which I do enjoy 1 game of per time but not more than a couple of times.

I wish them all the best with this shop. Using e-commerce as a means to fund it is a great way to do business.

I fully intend to get there one day, shame it’ll be a weekend and thus too busy to really enjoy.

    Hi

Thanks for the great write up on our shop. It is early days for us so the space will evolve over the next month or so. We will be having regular saturday events (probably once a month) with next Saturday (1st July) being Wimbledon themed.

buzzbop – you can in fact see your dreamcast on the high shelf in the pic above 🙂 It has been shipped out to you today so should be with you shortly.

Hope to see more of you in the store at some point.

    Cheers, Tom
